CHAPTER SIX

“And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.”

2 Corinthians 12:9

EARLY THE NEXT MORNING, GRACE got up, put a robe on, and went to the bathroom. She then went to the closet and pulled out a towel, setting it aside, then turned the water on, adjusting the temperature until it was how she wanted it. Pulling the shower curtain closed, she pulled the knob that switched the water from the faucet to the showerhead, and then she began to undress. Once undressed, she got into the shower and washed her hair, humming to herself, looking forward to starting the school day. When her hair was clean, she began scrubbing her body, but when she got to her chest, she frowned. Looking down, she pressed in a few places and felt a wave of fear go through her when her fingertips detected the small lump that should not have been there. Pressing more firmly on it, she realized it was wider than she’d first thought. Lord, please don’t let this be what I think it is, she prayed to herself.

Esther was in the living room fixing her hair when Grace came from down the hall. Esther glanced at her sister and then back to the little decorative mirror on the wall. “Mornin,’ sis,” Esther said conversationally, not seeing her sister’s too-pale face and fright-filled eyes.

“Esther, can you take my class? Something’s come up, and I’ve got to see about it.”

“Sure I can, but what’s going on?”

“I’d rather not say right now. I don’t know how long I’ll be but I’ll be back as soon as I can.”

“Okay, sis. I’ll see you at school when you get back.” If Esther had been looking at her sister, she would’ve instantly known that something was very wrong just by seeing that Grace’s hair was still wet from the shower, for Grace never went anywhere with her hair in disarray.

“Miss Cloverdale, how are you today?” Laura asked when she saw Grace walk up to the sign-in table.

“I’m doing well,” Grace said automatically and picked up the clipboard and a pen from the table.

“If you need to see a doctor, Sam is taking adults today. One of our general practitioners is out sick, so Sam is picking up the slack for him. He’s not busy right now either, so I could go get him if—”

“No, don’t,” Grace said. “Is there a female doctor available?”

Laura looked at Grace’s face and realized that something wasn’t right; but it wasn’t her business to pry, and so she said nothing. “Dr. Jackson is available. I’m pretty sure she can see you now.”

“That will be fine,” Grace said. On the clipboard, she wrote “Grace Cloverdale—sick visit.” She handed it back to the nurse and said, “I’d appreciate it if you didn’t mention this to Sam.”

“I won’t say a word, Miss Cloverdale,” Laura promised.
